The evolution of western Medicine in India started as early as 16th Century with the arrival of East India Company. As of 2017 there are a total of around 456 medical colleges with a combined capacity of 63,985 MBBS seats in India which Include Government as well as private medical colleges. Permission to establish a medical college are given under specified categories as listed below
Government Medical Colleges: Government Medical Colleges are run and managed by the State Government. MBBS admission in these medical colleges shall take place through common counselling conducted by the respective states However, 15% seats in each government medical college are reserved under All India Quota for students across the country. The Medical Counselling Committee shall conduct the counselling for these seats separately.
Private Medical Colleges: Private Medical Colleges are usually self-financing non-minority medical colleges. MBBS admission in these medical colleges shall take place through common counselling conducted by the centralised counselling authorities of that particular state.
Minority Medical Colleges: Minority medical colleges are private medical colleges categorized as religious and linguistic minorities. MBBS admission in these medical colleges shall take place through common counselling conducted by the centralised counselling authorities of that particular state.
Deemed Medical Colleges: Deemed medical colleges in are affiliated to concern deemed universities that are granted autonomous status. These universities enjoy complete autonomy in drafting their MBBS course work for their constituent deemed medical colleges. MBBS admission in these medical colleges shall take place through common counselling conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).

From the academic year 2017-18, the Honourable Supreme Court made it mandatory for medical aspirants to take National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) in order to secure MBBS admission. NEET is a national level medical entrance exam for admission to MBBS course in government medical colleges, private medical colleges and deemed medical colleges.National testing Authority (NTA) conducts National Eligibility Entrance Test or NEET UG in the month of May (tentatively). The NEET exam is conducted across various cities in Indian for candidates seeking MBBS admission. The NEET result are declared in the month of June (tentatively).
Medical aspirants must qualify in NEET with requisite percentile to secure a merit seat. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) shall be conducting online MBBS counselling for admission to deemed medical colleges and 15% All India Quota Seats in Government Medical Colleges. The respective state Authorities shall also be conducting online MBBS counselling for admission to government quota seats, private quota seats, NRI quota seats and other quota seats in Government Medical Colleges and Private Medical Colleges in their respective states.
To appear for NEET medical entrance exam, the NEET eligibility criteria says that: candidates must have passed their 12th std. or equivalent examination from a recognized institute with Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects as their main subjects and have scored a minimum of 50% aggregate marks.
For MBBS admission 2020 in medical colleges in India, it is mandatory for candidates to qualify in NEET UG 2020 that will be conducted in the month of May 2020 by NTA in various test centres across India.
NEET entrance exam for MBBS admission in India is highly competitive, as students from across the country participate in it. This year roughly 13 lakh students have already registered for participating in the NEET UG exams. The qualification benchmark of 50 percentile shall be based on the performance of the students overall and mean aggregate 50 % value shall determine the cut-off marks.
